Inspired by the tragic events of Tiananmen Square in Beijing in June 1989, in a state of emergency Gao Xingjian wrote the theatrical play Escape (逃亡/Táowáng /La Fuite) that same year. Without ever naming Beijing 4 June events, this play represents the meeting of three characters, a young actress, a young student and an intellectual who in different capacities participated in the demonstrations against the authoritarian political regime. To escape the bloody repression orchestrated by the PRC government, they find themselves trapped in a warehouse for a whole night, where their lives exposed to terror seem to seek every means (sex, dream, infighting) to escape the violent reality which nevertheless eventually catches up with them...

This play has been staged many times in several countries around the world, in Sweden, Germany, Poland, France, Japan, Benin, Ivory Coast, Nigeria, Canada, Portugal, Italy, England... In May 2023, Jean-Yves Heurtebise with students from Fu Jen Catholic University of Taiwan staged the play for the time ever in Taiwan and, more largely, in the Sinophone world. The play then won numerous awards (including best scenography) in the framework of Association of French Teachers of Taiwan (APFT) Theater Festival organized in partnership with Taiwan French Bureau (BFT).

Our intervention aims to present the play Escape by questioning its aesthetic and political issues. We will rely on a dramatic analysis of the play and on examples of its different mise en scènes (staging and performances) whose last installment is the version produced by the students of FJU theater course, focusing in particular on its creative process: choice of music, costumes, settings, etc.

Last but not least, we would also like to offer a performance in tribute to Gao Xingjian whose practice of clandestine literary writing during the Cultural Revolution inspired the poetry performance Parole di salvia (Words of Sage) that Simona Polvani created in 2021 at the Maison d’Europe in Paris. In collaboration with Jean-Yves Heurtebise, Simona Polvani herself will introduce and then perform a new version of this performance, specifically designed for the National Taiwan Normal University and Gao Xingjian Research Center.

Thus, it will be showed how one play can generate many different modes of embodiment on the stage.
