Chen Ke-zhong was from Houmin, Fujian. He graduated from Tsinghua University in 1920 and received public funding for further studies in the U.S. In 1924 he received a bachelor's degree from Yale University, the following year he received a master's degree from the University of Chicago. In 1926 he received a PhD in chemistry from the University of Chicago.

He became chairperson of NTNU's Department of Physics and Chemistry in 1950, and was the dean of the College of Science from 1955-1962. During his term of service, he separated the Department of Physics and Chemistry into the Department of Physics and the Department of Chemistry.

Chemistry. From 1932 Chen participated with the National Institute for Compilation and Translation in the compilation of Chinese scientific terms.

Chen was a former director of the National Institute for Compilation and Translation; president of Zhongshan University, China; dean of the College of Science, National Taiwan Normal University; Tsinghua University director of academic affairs and president.
